National Day

The 17 of May our family got together to celebrate the National Day of Norway.

After spending the morning at our son's school we went to my parents-in-law for a traditional Norwegian meal, smørbrød, (open sandwich) one piece of bread topped with cold steak, shrimps, smoked salmon, omelet, fenalår, (slices of cured lamb leg) and cold salad.

For desert we had boller (buns) and bløtekake, (cream layer cake).
We are lucky to have a mother-in-law that prepares delicious home made meals.

National Celebration

The 17 of may is the Norwegian National Day. Just like other national celebration this one is full of history and traditions. Men, women, and specially children color the streets in red, blue and white with their flags, ribbons and bunads during the parades. The children also make a lot of noise shouting "Hurra!", singing, blowing whistles and shaking rattles.

I became a norwegian citizen a few years ego and I do celebrate this day with pride and honor. We are raising our boys to love two cultures and the most simple lesson is to teach them by example.
At home the celebration continuous around the dinner table with traditional foods. We use to have shrimps, smoked salmon, different types of hams, scrambled eggs, salad and fruits.
For desert my mother-in-law makes her traditional fruit cake. The bottom is made of nuts, fill with two types of cream and cover with kiwi, strawberries, tangerines and grapes. It tastes as good as it looks!
This year we are going to invite some friends to our home and I am putting together something special :)
Wish you all a happy weekend!
